Caribbean is of course the ultimate luxury destination. Close to hand for both North Americans and Europeans, English speaking and with a dependable tropical climate. Let’s be honest – the Caribbean invented luxury resorts and luxury islands back in the 1950’s and 60’s!

Now something strange has happened – the Caribbean is on sale! In high season – and I don’t mean just the three star places either. As the region enters the height of the season when the weather is at its beach and the beaches the most attractive.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization has committed to raising around $60 million for a big marketing drive. The problem appears to be that potential tourists are still convinced that they are seeing the best deals – they are waiting out the tourist operators to see what better offers can be put on the table.

One of the problems that the Caribbean is that airlines have been cutting capacity with services reduced by around 14% keeping the airfares relatively high.

This time of the year you wouldn’t normally be able to get a booking at the luxurious Malliouhana Hotel and Spa on Anguilla – now they are offering extras on their luxurious four-night mini-break including messages, snorkeling and meals. The exclusive Malliouhana Resort has a spectacular view from a bluff overlooking the warm Caribbean waters and the white sands of Turtle Cove and Meads Bay. Mulliouhana is in the British West Indies, Anguilla is one of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean.

Another luxury destination which is offering great deals is the exclusive Parrot Cay, located on its own private island in the Turks and Caicos. They are offering two free nights on booking of three or five nights. Parrot Cay is an exclusive retreat which bills itself as somewhere to:

“Think of it in simple terms: a place to rediscover those forgotten rhythms of long days, easy nights, and the salve of peace.

Yoga on the beach at dawn is on offer as is Pilates. For the more energetic Parrot Cay has a full range of water-sports including windsurfing and diving. Or if the beach gets all too exciting you can just chill next to the 5000 sq ft infinity pool. There are two sophisticated and well-regarded restaurants one specializing in Asian cuisine, the other in Mediterranean. Or if you are taking the whole de-tox thing serious there is the COMO Shambhala Cuisine for those who want to experience raw whole foods.

Whatever your style of holiday: whether its yoga or jet skiing or relaxing by the pool the Caribbean has something to offer for everyone. The exciting thing is that for those of us who thought they couldn’t afford a truely luxury holiday – 2009 may be our chance to experience a 5-star resort!
