Defining Luxury
According to Answers.com, luxury means spending more than one needs to, and, in the view of some who concern themselves with the matter, more than one ought to, on comforts and pleasures. “Le superflu, chose si nécessaire,” “The superfluous, a very necessary thing” is Voltaire’s the paradoxical definition of luxury in Le Mondain, a poem published in 1736. Whether or not luxury is necessary to individuals, it plays a crucial role in human society, making the distinction between haves and have-nots, identifying social classes and setting targets for the ambitious.
The dictionary definition of luxury is:
n. pl. lux·u·ries
- Something inessential but conducive to pleasure and comfort.
- Something expensive or hard to obtain.
- Sumptuous living or surroundings.

Becky Scott is a professional writer with a somewhat well-developed nose for celebrity real estate happenings. Some would call this an obsession (or at least Brad Pitt’s lawyers did) but it’s a healthy obsession as far as her readers are concerned. When she’s not snarking about celebrity antics, Becky Scott writes about, well, writing, on her professional site Becky’s Corner and just about everything else at her personal blog Miss Priss. She’s a writer and editor with experience in technology, software development, telecomm, SEO, social marketing, higher ed, parenting, and of course, blogging. She got her degree in English and actually uses it, contrary to popular belief about English majors. Becky moonlights as an amateur photographer, taking advantage of photographic opportunities in picturesque and celebrity-filled San Diego. The recent addition of a 1000mm telephoto lens takes care of the restraining order restrictions
Just kidding. She lives there with her husband and son.

Hong Kong
Robert Diefendorf was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States,. He grew up there and in New England, and as an adult, grew up once again in New York City. According to Bob, “Having married late, I am growing up a third time in Hong Kong.“ Robert attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Boston University and to his surprise and despite his best efforts, was awarded diplomas by both institutions.
Robert is now a professional real estate agent in Hong Kong, although in a previous life his profession was confusing children at the piano for the past 20 to 25 years ( he lost count after the first 10 or so) . Robert also helped build/direct Westminster Conservatory’s gifted program, which he never would have gotten into himself. As a way of making himself seem more important, he started a nonprofit, The Small Miracles Foundation, and in his own words,
“It was here that I could really make a mess of things - convincing high school aged musicians that they were teachers, disadvantaged kids that they could play an instrument, and donors that I was actually accomplishing something. Despite my deceptions, or maybe as a result, it has been incredibly rewarding. Not being satisfied with simply mystifying people in person, I wrote a book on education. This enabled me to muck up exponentially greater number of minds, some on whom, to solidify their confusion, visited me in Princeton. Completely by luck, I invested in two houses in NJ and watched them appreciate by over 600%. I bought in the worst neighborhood that is now the hottest. Go figure.
We are now in Hong Kong as of Summer, 07. After realizing I’ve spent a quarter century having a great time with students, colleges and nonprofits, I decided to actually accomplish something. I have started my own company, Global Welcome. As the name suggests, we welcome people from around the globe and help them find the most expensive, er, the most appropriate digs for their family. Investment opportunities are also our specialty (remember my great luck in NJ???). ”
Robert is a gifted writer, a talented real estate agent, and perhaps more importantly, has a sense of humor. He also welcomes the opportunity to confuse even more people in his current occupation. Robert can be reached at - Robert Diefendorf
