An awful lot of small investors have lost their shirts here. I am talking about the people fooled by the western banks and estate agencies. I cannot claim to be JEALOUS of their "success" as I have always seen it as short term, credit driven. True its latest boom came after we greedy western nations got into the act, first to enjoy our holidays in sun and later to enjoy tax free profiteering. They could have pushed the renewable energy route and become a new age society based on green values. Instead they turned a desert into an even more inhospitable place! Never thought that would be possible but just try living there on an average income, its hell on earth. No car, no decent public transport, clubs and gyms require membership and lists are long. Eating out expensive and luxury hotels cater for the few that can afford it. Where ever you look there are tiny skinny indian men dangling from ropes attached to skyscrapers scorting themselves on these horrid construction sites. Not a place to lay down your roots and bring up a family. Dubai should have tried to offer something different to the world, something more wholesome, real and ethical.
