Moscow’s most expensive rental

1

most-expensive-apartment-moscowHow about the most expensive apartment in Moscow? $50,ooo per month will rent you a 21 room luxury apartment in downtown Moscow close to the Arbatskaya metro station. The apartment includes 8 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and 4 parking spaces.

The apartment was put up for rent this week – so far no takers, but with Russian Oligarchs needing government bailouts left and right, I wonder who would be likely to take this on. Yelena Baturina, Russia’s richest woman and one of the largest property developers in Moscow was forced to seek a government balout to the tune of $1.4 billion in March, so we shall see. According to The Moscow News, the dreaded communal apartment, infamous as the cause of countless domestic scandals, is rising from the dead – fueled by the current economic hard times.

Originally created by the Soviet government to ease housing shortages by settling several separate families into one shared apartment, the communal apartment, or kommunalka, seemed to be a dying breed, as wealthy investors bought out whole families, reunifying the previously divided apartments. Moscow is well known to be one of the most expensive places to live in the world, given the great disparity between the rich and the poor. So if the wealthiest Russian individuals can afford to invest their money into New York and London, I bet someone can afford a $50,000 per month apartment, which is not that rare in places like New York City.
