Jed Clampett’s Home Goes on the Market

V08017045 1Buddy Ebsen’s widow has put their Palos Verdes Estates home for sale at $3.24 million. The home, on Via Horquilla, has 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms in just under 4400 square feet.

The listing describes this as a stately French Normandy featuring Palladian windows in the living room, a formal dining room, large kitchen with adjoining breakfast room, a library with coffered ceiling and fireplace, and a dramatic entry staircase. The three large bedrooms upstairs each comes with its own bathroom, while the fourth is being used as an artist’s retreat on the entry level. It overlooks the Palos Verdes Country Club fairways and Santa Monica Bay.

We have to admit, darlings, that the views are simply splendid, especially from that upper level. The patio off of the breakfast room would be a nice little area to hang out on Sunday mornings with some coffee and the newspaper. We’re not so sure about having a fireplace in the library, though. We know a lot of people do that and like it, but with books nearby — in this case on either side of the fire — it just seems to be tempting fate a bit too much for our taste.

The kitchen is a nice size and we love it when there’s an island. But the cabinets are so dark and outdated that they would need some sort of facelift. Please, no paint. We hate paint covering up wood cabinets and too many people choose white. Ugh.

Speaking of white, what’s with all of the white furniture and curtains? Can we please get some color in that house? It reminds us of rentals where every wall has to be white or ecru. Say you agree, my lovelies.

There’s no pool and, surprisingly, no cooling either. While we’re sure the home gets a lovely ocean breeze now and again, there are some summer days where it’s just too hot not to have some extra cooling help.

Ebsen was best known as Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies. His other high profile gigs included Doc Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Barnaby in Barnaby Jones. He was originally slated to play the tin man in the Wizard of Oz, but a bad reaction to the silver makeup they used almost killed him.
