Cher wants to sell her Malibu mansion
Cher no longer wants to be Malibu Barbie. She’s putting her (approximately) 14,000-square-foot mansion (Mr. Big Time lists it as just over 13,000 sq. ft., as does Real Estalker) up for sale. To the tune of $45,000,000. That’s just crazy talk! But, it’s true, and listed with Hilton & Hyland.
The Wall Street Journal wrote about the listing today. And this evening, we found the listing on the MLS. Unfortunately, there’s only one picture right now. We’re hoping for more at a later time (we’ll see).
You don’t often find 1.7 acre estates in Malibu. That alone probably makes this property worth quite a bit. But $45 million? She must be very hopeful during the current real estate market.
The monstrous home has 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a theatre, gym, and several verandas — according to listing information. Apparently even the tennis court has quite a view. The property also has an infinity pool and a guest house.
We really wish there was a more detailed description of the property available so we could tell you more. We’ll keep researching and let you know if we come up with a bit more about this estate.
Update: For more info about the home, including some great pictures, see the Architectural Digest write-up on Cher’s home. Hat tip to reader Mike for the link. Thanks, Mike!

Duchovny and Leoni did indeed sell Malibu home
We mentioned last month that David Duchovny and Téa Leoni put their home on the market and then dropped the listing a couple of weeks later. There were conflicting stories about whether they were rethinking the sale or wanting to return to New York, and their agent wouldn’t confirm whether the house had an offer.
The LA Times is now confirming that the couple does indeed have an offer on the house, although there’s not any information on the buyer at this time, including the price paid. The home was listed for $12 million.
As mentioned before, the home is 6,578 square-feet, has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, two pools, a gym, and a guest house. The home was sold quite quickly, considering the real estate market (and the economy).
Duchovny is best known for his role as Fox Mulder on the tv series X-Files. As seems to be the trend right now, the characters in the series return in a movie (now in theaters). While we watched the series at the beginning, it eventually got too weird for us to continue. We probably stopped watching sometime after the episode “Home” — which is just too creepy for words. Remember the three brothers from Pennsylvania, and the woman under the bed? Yeah, that one. *shudder*
Anywho, in addition to the X-Files movie, Mulder has been in the series Californication. Anyone else start hearing the Red Hot Chile Peppers when they see the series name? Our favorite Duchovny film would probably be the sleeper Return to Me. Why, yes, we do like sappy movies once in a while.
Leoni, on the other hand… well, sorry but we’re just not a fan of the work she’s been doing. Although, in spite of the reviews, we kinda liked Spanglish, but that was more in spite of Leoni than because of her.
We’ll keep watching for news of who bought the home and let you know when we see something.

Garth and Trisha buy in Malibu
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, both country music superstars, have bought a house in Malibu. According to the LA TImes, the purchase price wasn’t disclosed, but the home was listed at $5.45 million.
This new house, at about 3,700 square feet seems, well, a little small for the Oklahoma native. His house near Owasso sits on 2,400 acres and looks like a village. But the house in Malibu has something the Owasso house doesn’t: a half acre and Pacific Ocean beach access.
Pictures show a nice little patio in the back of the new home, with plenty of yard for Brooks’ rugrats to play in. The master bedroom has two sets of french doors that open onto part of the patio. With lots of light and vaulted ceilings, the master suite has a nice feeling of space. We like, except for the 4-poster bed. (Not a fan.)
When you get to the living room (or maybe it’s a den), though, you can start to see the house’s age. It was built in 1958. Although the brick fireplace and built-in sideboard are nice enough, they look a bit dated. Or maybe it’s the couch, chairs, and coffee table that add to the dated look.
The kitchen, on the other hand, looks like it has been redone. The high windows and skylight bring in a lot of natural light. The countertops, island, and 6-burner stove make us drool just a tiny bit. And we even like the old-style cabinet on the back wall of the kitchen. Gives it almost a country feel. The dining room has three sets of french doors that open onto the patio. Again, lots of light really keeps this room from being drab and too beige.
The second living room - or whatever it is -also has the high windows for plenty of light. We’re not so sure about the tile, though. We’d prefer the wood floors of the master suite. At least it’s much less out-of-style than the other living room was.
Even if you’re not a fan of country music, you’ve probably heard of Brooks. He’s the top-selling solo artist of the 20th century. His free concert in Central Park in 1997 was reportedly one of the most well-attended Central Park concerts ever. Many of his albums went platinum multiple times.
Brooks divorced his wife, Sandra, in 2001. After that quieted down, he started dating Yearwood. There had been rumors of an affair for years, but both deny it. Even if there was no affair, you could tell Brooks felt something for Yearwood just based on the way he talked about her in interviews. He had nothing but high praise and a good dose of affection for her. They married in 2005.

David Duchovny and Tea Leoni Drop Malibu Home Listing
David Duchovny and Téa Leoni put their Malibu home on the market for $12 million. And then they dropped the listing just a couple of weeks later. What gives?
Hot Property reports conflicting stories. We’ve heard they want to return to New York - maybe even before school starts. I guess even the beautiful ocean view isn’t enough to make them forget about the frequent Malibu fires. But their agent says they like the house so much they’re trying to make up their minds. She wouldn’t comment on whether the 6,578 square-foot house has an offer (another reason to withdraw the listing).
They stand to make a tidy profit, though, having bought the house in 1999 for $3.55 million. With two pools, a gym, and a guest house, it’s possible the house is under contract. After maybe 2 - 2 1/2 weeks on the market. That’s impressive given the recent lackluster sales in much of SoCal real estate.
In fact, just two doors down, Kenny Chesney’s house is still awaiting a sale.

Rent Kurt and Goldie’s Beachfront Malibu Home
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn put their Broad Beach Road house up for lease this summer. The cost? Only $95,000. Per month, two month minimum from June to September.
Well, what do you get for that tiny wad of cash? According to the listing, the master suite has floor-to-ceiling windows, a beachfront balcony, a luxurious spa-inspired bath area, and walk-in closet. The house also has a media/screening room, two other large bedroom suites, and a detached guest/meditation room and gym. You know, to meditate on why you’re not down on the beach just feet away. Or to work out so you’ll look fabulous on said beach.
Take a close look at the picture and you’ll see a great entertainment area with some serious green lawn space. And the view in the background? Spectacular vistas of the Pacific, my darlings.
The listing, as Real Estalker points out, mentions that the rental home is for sale. We’re not sure if that’s a typo or if they’ve actually listed the property. Since there’s no other price listed, we think it’s just a rental. For now.

Kenny Chesney One of Latest Stars to Buy Malibu Property
Earlier this year, country music star Kenny Chesney purchased a Malibu home for $7.4 million. Chesney is a superstar in Nashville land, regularly selling out his concerts.
The house is small by Malibu standards, with two bedrooms and three baths. Listings mention a pool, farmhouse kitchen, nicely-sized living areas and outdoor verandas. With just over a 1/2 acre, though, it’s no slouch in the land department. With gardens, lawns, water views, outdoor oven and barbecue, and an infinity pool (which we would love to have), this sounds like a nice little space for entertaining.

And since Chesney’s brief 2005 marriage to Renee Zellweger went by the wayside, he’s been enjoying his beach party lifestyle. This home certainly does help perpetuate that image. Having said all that, we do admit that Chesney’s concerts are not only wildly popular, but quite entertaining as well. And full of beer. Lots and lots of beer. Still, he’s come a long way from "She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy." Thankfully.
Update: No sooner did we report this news, and find that Chesney’s February purchase is already back up for sale. Chesney is said to be too busy to spend time in Malibu.

Looks like Shannen Doherty placed her 3,410 square-foot house in Malibu for sale last week. The house, on Winding Way in Malibu, is listed at $4,400,000 — which is over $1.8 million more than she paid for it.
The house was built in 1976, has five bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, and an ocean view. According to the property listing, it sits on over one acre and boasts a flower-lined drive leading up to a large motor court. The master suite even has a fireplace for those chilly Malibu nights. Oh, and she’s apparently throwing in most of the appliances, too.
Didn’t Spider-Man just buy an acre for $10 million in Brentwood? And this is a Malibu property with an acre for under a half million? Why, it’s practically a steal. Unless, of course, it just so happens to be located near mud slide areas. And while the "towering trees" and "fragrant gardens" sound nice, will they be so great when the yearly fires come through? Of course, my pretties, don’t worry about fires if you’re interested in this property. It has survived since the 70s, hasn’t it? Odds are pretty good it’s not in that part of Malibu. An ocean view doesn’t necessarily mean the home is perched on a cliff, now, does it? So you’re probably safe from mud slides, too. Probably.
We haven’t heard yet why Doherty is placing the house for sale. But she does still own another Malibu home, so maybe she’s tired of the upkeep. Or maybe, with her reputation of being hard to work with, she’s having trouble finding a gig and needs to save money? After all, rumors abounded on both "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Charmed" about her attitude. Notice both shows went on without her? Hmmm, we’ll have to wait and see on that one, darlings.
