Kiefer Sutherland buys in Manhattan’s West Village

527854It wasn’t too long ago that we talked about Kiefer Sutherland and his Los Angeles warehouse listing. And now, Sutherland has bought a five-story townhouse in the West Village for $8,250,000.

The town home was built in 1905 and is somewhere between ~3,700 and ~4,800 square feet depending on which records you peruse. There isn’t a ton of information about Sutherland’s purchase, according to Big Time Listings. But those savvy searchers found a previous listing of the home that mentions several fireplaces and a garden.

We’re quite sad, actually, that we don’t have more pictures so we can admire the architecture of the home and see what it looks like now that it has been converted (reportedly) from a six unit property to a single family.

Does this mean that Kiefer is leaving the west coast? It seems that the next season of 24 is going to be set in Washington, D.C., which could explain why he bought a place on the east coast. Production recently shut down on the series while producers revise the direction of the series’ last six episodes.

Philip Seymour Hoffman buys in the West Village

In June it was rumored that actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was under contract to purchase a place in Manhattan’s West Village. Last week the $4,250,000 purchase was confirmed. The 6-room loft has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.

The prewar co-op has high ceilings, which I (and that very tall mister of mine) do like. It really does help give the feeling of big spaces, even when you don’t have them. It also boasts of doors from Provence, gorgeous wood floors, and fireplace (perfect for those nasty Manhattan winters).

The living area is large. It’s quite possible you could host a bowling alley lane or two in there. While the open floor plan can be great for making the space seem, well, huge, we like a little bit of division in our rooms. So we can work without TV noise, and all that jazz.

You can see exposed brick walls here and there. We realize it’s a design feature but it does seem a bit odd to have one in the bathroom. Also in that bathroom? A tub, sitting by its lonesome in what seems to be a fairly large bathroom. Of course, there’s a shower and toilet off to the side, but the tub appears to be the centerpiece. And if you love to take baths, that’s probably a pretty awesome feature.

The New York Post mentioned that Hoffman and his girlfriend Mimi O’Donnell have been looking for a place for two years. We guess they wanted to find THE perfect spot for them and their two children.

We admit we haven’t seen a lot of Hoffman’s work, including his Oscar-winning performance. But we have seen a few of them, including Cold Mountain and Almost Famous.

Natalie Portman is leaving West Village

327773.1 While we were reviewing Bob Costas’ recent sale, we also saw the Observer report that Natalie Portman is selling her West Village apartment for $6.65 million. (Mr. Big Time mentions it, too.)

The floor plan of Portman’s 2 (or 3) bedroom, 3 bath abode shows a balcony off of the great room, a dining room that can double as another bedroom, and two walk-in closets in the master bedroom. Looking at the pictures you’ll see a ton of windows, giving spectacular city views. The entire place looks bright and airy. We just love the dark wood floors. The kitchen could be a little bigger, but it opens up into the 28′ x 22′ great room, giving the appearance of much more space than a mere 9′ x 12′ (approx.).

The building features 24-hour concierge, a fitness center, professional screening room, and a 50′ infinity-edge lap pool, according to listing information. The all-glass residence was designed by Richard Meier.

Portman is probably best known for playing Queen Amidala in the “new” Star Wars episodes (yes, they will always be the new Star Wars to us). But her best role is still as Mathilda in The Professional. Amazing performance. She did quite well in V is for Vendetta also.

Gisele re-lists West Village penthouse

gisele bundchen penthouseGisele Bundchen, fancypants supermodel, has re-listed her Manhattan penthouse, asking $5.9 million for the ~1,700-square-foot apartment. It was previously listed at $10.9 million in Fall 2007. That’s quite a drop in her asking price. Ms. Bundchen originally paid around $3 million for the unit, according to the WSJ, and this is not the first time she has dropped the price.

Listing information calls it a West Village spectacular triplex condominium apartment with breathtaking views of the Hudson River. The 2-bedroom, 2.5-bath home has a key-locked elevator for privacy with a loft-style living room (including a fireplace).

It features a dining area and an open kitchen. In addition, how about a terrace with a 47-foot long outdoor area for entertaining? With a grill and dining furniture, to boot! And the two bedrooms are supposed to appear suspended over the river. That could either be really cool, if you like the view, or quite scary if you’re afraid of heights or water.

The third level of the penthouse features a jacuzzi/hot tub. Perfect for relaxing after a long, tiresome day. We would love to stretch out at night, enjoying the views and the lights. Sign us up! But at around $3,400 a square-foot, it better have a damn-fine interior. The listing conveniently leaves out any inside photos, preferring to concentrate on the terrace and views.

And maybe that’s part of the problem - buyers want to catch a glimpse of a place before trekking all over the kingdom, up and down stairs and elevators. They need some enticement and it’s possible they just aren’t getting it on this listing. Or maybe it’s still just too expensive.

Amy Sedaris buys West Village co-op

Amy Sedaris has decided to buy, rather than rent, in New York’s West Village, according to the Observer. She reportedly paid $1,300,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bath co-op.

The 9,000 square-foot apartment (according to the Observer) is in a brownstone on West 9th. The listing touts original detail and prewar charm. It has two fireplaces and a den that could serve as a second bedroom. It also boasts original floors, doors, and hardware. If it was well-made, that can be a bonus. If not, well, Amy will probably be hiring a contractor very soon.

The beamed ceilings certainly sound nice, but with these limited pictures it’s a bit hard to tell. The kitchen still looks prewar as well (although the listing says “updated”) and we certainly hope Ms. Sedaris will spend some money and make it somewhat useable.

If this place really is 9,000 square-feet, then the pictures don’t do it justice at all. It looks tiny from what we could see. Maybe they meant 900? That would be more in line with a $1,250,000 listing price, we think. The floor plan seems to confirm that more reasonable number as well.

Sedaris is probably best known for — besides being David Sedaris’ sister — her role in Strangers with Candy. Apparently she’s crafty, too, making homemade baked goods like cheese balls and cupcakes.

Carly Simon Sells Out

Looks like Carly Simon is getting out of her West Village co-op. She listed the two-bedroom duplex with her sister, Joanna Simon for $3.8 million.

The NY Post reports that she’s mostly living in Martha’s Vineyard anyway, so what’s the point? Of course, they also report that Carly used her “unique style and taste” on the place. Oh, really? Shall we take a look at the few pics we could find?

First, what the heck is that under the TV? Not the fireplace, but… is that seating? Why would anyone put seating there? I hope we’re just seeing things and it’s not a couple of bench seats (built in, no less). I don’t know if it’s the brick color or what, but something about that living room just seems off. Maybe it’s because we hate that style of curtain?

The kitchen is a little better. Clever use of the space under the stairs. And while open shelving may be great for some people, I don’t like it. Too much to clean if you cook something messy (like bacon… mmmm, bacon). But it’s certainly a functional kitchen.

This bedroom certainly is cozy. But what is the deal with the bed? And the material draped all over one side only? Just odd and slightly irritating. If you want a funny draped material story, make sure you check out the Real Estalker’s take on it. Anyway, we’re really not fans of the whole “let’s drape some material around the room to add color and texture.”

Oh, but we saved the best for last. What. The. Hell. There is a tub in the middle of the room. And it doesn’t just look like it’s there for decoration. Now we don’t know about you all, but that’s just a little bit “too” intimate for our tastes.

While we’re not big fans of Ms. Simon’s decorating sensibilities (we’re sure someone out there will love it), we certainly can’t say the same about her music. Who isn’t a fan of at least some of her music?
